The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has called for a six-hour shutdown in Bhubaneswar, Odisha, on Tuesday to protest the alleged custodial assault of an Army officer and his fiancée. The bandh, scheduled from 6 am to 12 noon, aims to highlight concerns over police brutality. BJD leaders, including MLA Arun Kumar Sahoo, expressed deep shock at the incident, calling it shameful for the state. They have demanded a judicial inquiry and a court-monitored Special Investigation Team probe into the matter, following claims from the couple that they were assaulted during a visit to the Bharatpur police station. The protest seeks accountability for the alleged misconduct of the authorities involved.

The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) party in Odisha has declared a six-hour shutdown in Bhubaneswar on Tuesday, protesting against the alleged custodial assault of an Army officer and his fiancée. The shutdown, also known as a hartal, is scheduled to take place from 6 am to 12 noon.

During a press conference on Sunday, BJD MLA Arun Kumar Sahoo announced plans to escalate their protest regarding police brutality. He emphasized the party’s commitment to holding the authorities accountable.

BJD vice-president Debi Prasad Mishra expressed deep concern, stating, “The custodial torture and sexual assault incident has shamed Odisha.” He added that party chief Naveen Patnaik is deeply disturbed by the situation. Earlier, Patnaik urged for a judicial inquiry and a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to look into the matter.

The controversy erupted after the Army officer and his fiancée were reportedly assaulted at the Bharatpur police station while attempting to file a complaint regarding a road rage incident. The fiancée accused the police of sexual abuse during her detention, while the Army officer alleged illegal detention and torture.

This shutdown serves as a demand for accountability from the police department over these serious allegations.
