Akhilesh Yadav, the president of the Samajwadi Party, criticized the encounter policy of the Yogi Adityanath government in Uttar Pradesh, labeling many of these incidents “fake.” He pointed out that despite about 18,000 encounters resulting in nearly 200 fatalities, crime rates, especially against women, have continued to rise. Yadav highlighted that Uttar Pradesh has the highest reported instances of rape in India according to the National Crime Records Bureau. He also addressed concerns about the government’s handling of a smartphone distribution event and suggested that it was unfairly targeting certain communities. Yadav expressed his belief that the ruling party’s approach undermines democracy, particularly through its one nation-one election initiative, which he argues threatens the integrity of the Election Commission.

In a recent press conference in Kannauj, Akhilesh Yadav, the president of the Samajwadi Party, slammed the ‘encounter policy’ of the Yogi Adityanath government. He called these police encounters “fake” and pointed out that they have not improved safety or law and order in Uttar Pradesh. Yadav noted that around 18,000 encounters have occurred in the state, leading to nearly 200 deaths, questioning the effectiveness of such measures as crime, particularly against women, remains disturbingly high.

Referencing data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), he highlighted that Uttar Pradesh reports the most rapes in the country, urging a probe into these so-called encounters. He also criticized the government for what he described as targeting Muslims, especially in the recent arrest of party MLA Zahid Beg, and reacted to a smartphone distribution event in Ghaziabad where beneficiaries lost their phones shortly after receiving them.

Yadav further defended his comments regarding the chief minister, stating that his remarks were not meant to disrespect any saints or holy figures, but were a reflection on the chief minister’s position as a mathadheesh. He ended his statements by criticizing the BJP government’s plans for a one nation-one election initiative, arguing that it undermines democracy and the integrity of the Election Commission of India.

This confrontation highlights ongoing tensions in state politics and raises significant questions about law enforcement practices in Uttar Pradesh.
