India’s government is set to enhance its artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities with the India AI mission, which has a budget of Rs 10,372 crores. A significant portion, over Rs 4,500 crores, will focus on increasing “compute capacity” through potential viability gap funding. During a Deloitte India event, Electronics and IT Secretary S Krishnan announced plans to support the creation of more computational resources, particularly through partnerships with private firms. The government is also inviting bids for AI services on the cloud, aiming to establish a robust AI ecosystem that includes over 10,000 GPUs for various stakeholders. This initiative is designed to support startups and academic institutions while also catering to public sector needs.

The Indian government is planning to enhance its artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities by creating more “compute capacity” through funding initiatives. This announcement was made by Electronics and IT Secretary S Krishnan at a recent Deloitte India event. The focal point is the extensive India AI Mission, which has a budget of Rs 10,372 crore, with over Rs 4,500 crore specifically allocated to building compute capacity.

Krishnan highlighted that as the country increases its compute capacity, the government may consider additional support through the viability gap funding model. This funding approach would allow for further investment in the AI ecosystem, which is critical given the global surge in demand for GPU-based servers that excel at data processing.

In a bid to encourage innovation, the government has also invited bids for companies to provide AI services on the cloud. As part of the India AI Mission, more than 10,000 GPUs will be available to various organizations, enabling a robust AI landscape.

The initiative aims to foster a public-private partnership model, where those who have already established AI compute resources can offer them at reduced prices to startups, academic institutions, and small businesses. The government plans to subsidize up to 50 percent of these costs through vouchers.

Moreover, the compute capacity is being developed under the National Supercomputer Mission to better meet public sector needs.

With these initiatives, India aims to position itself as a significant player in the global AI arena, driving growth and innovation in the sector.
