Arvind Kejriwal is expected to resign as Chief Minister of Delhi in a meeting with Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena. He announced his decision to step down to prove his innocence regarding allegations linked to an excise policy corruption case, from which he was recently granted bail. Kejriwal has also requested early Assembly elections in Delhi, although the current term lasts until February 2025. The Election Commission of India (ECI) will ultimately determine the election schedule, considering various factors like weather and security. Meanwhile, the ECI is focused on upcoming polls in Jammu and Kashmir, Haryana, Maharashtra, and Jharkhand, with no immediate plans for Delhi elections.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is expected to resign during a meeting with Delhi Lieutenant Governor Vinai Kumar Saxena at 4.30 PM on Tuesday. This announcement comes after Kejriwal informed Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) workers that he plans to step down and prove his innocence in an alleged corruption case related to the excise policy, from which he was recently granted bail by the Supreme Court.

In addition to his resignation, Kejriwal has been advocating for Assembly elections in Delhi to be held alongside upcoming elections in Maharashtra, despite the fact that the current Delhi Assembly’s term does not end until February 2025. The Election Commission of India (ECI) oversees election scheduling, and while the Chief Minister can recommend the dissolution of the Assembly, the final decision rests with the Lieutenant Governor and the Central Government.

With the ECI currently focused on elections in Jammu and Kashmir, and with several other state elections also on the horizon, it’s unclear when elections will be scheduled for Delhi. The ECI must ensure that a new Assembly is in place before the current one’s term ends, taking various factors like security and weather into account while planning the election timeline.

As the political landscape in Delhi continues to evolve, the AAP is likely to announce Kejriwal’s successor during a meeting of its MLAs scheduled for Tuesday morning. This development not only marks a significant shift in Delhi’s political arena but also raises questions about the future management and governance of the National Capital Territory.
