Congress MP Jairam Ramesh has accused the Mahayuti government in Maharashtra of facilitating a “rigged deal” after the Adani Group won a bid to supply 6,600 MW of bundled renewable and thermal power to the state. This comes as the government faces the prospect of a significant defeat in the upcoming assembly polls. Ramesh criticized the government’s decision, suggesting that in its final days of power, it chose to favor what he calls a “Modani enterprise.” The Adani Group confirmed the bid, which includes thermal power and renewable energy from Gujarat. Supplies are set to commence within 48 months. Ramesh indicated that more information about the deal will soon emerge.

Congress MP Jairam Ramesh has raised serious allegations against the Adani Group following its recent win of a bid to supply 6,600 MW of bundled renewable and thermal power to Maharashtra. The announcement, made on September 15, 2024, has sparked controversy, with Ramesh calling the deal a “rigged arrangement” facilitated by the current Mahayuti government. He suggested that this action reflects the government’s desperation as it approaches what he claims will be a landslide defeat in the upcoming assembly elections.

The Adani Group’s bid was awarded after they quoted Rs 4.08 per unit, outbidding competitors such as JSW Energy and Torrent Power. Reflecting on the deal, Ramesh voiced his concerns through social media platform X, stating, “Even as the Mahayuti Government in Maharashtra totters towards a landslide defeat, this is what they choose to do with their last few days in power.” He indicated that more shocking details about the deal would emerge soon.

In a confirmation of the agreement, the Adani Group stated that the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company (MSEDCL) has issued a letter of intent for the 6,600 MW supply. This includes commitments from Adani Power to deliver 1,496 MW of thermal energy and 5,000 MW of solar energy from their Khavda renewable energy park in Gujarat. The solar power is set at a fixed cost of Rs 2.70 per unit, while the thermal supply will fluctuate based on coal prices.

As this story develops, it remains to be seen how these allegations will impact the political landscape ahead of the elections. The focus is now on the transparency and integrity of the bidding processes in the energy sector.
