Protesting junior doctors in West Bengal are seeking intervention from the President and Prime Minister after unsuccessful talks with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee. Their agitation started following the tragic rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College on August 9. In a detailed letter, the doctors expressed concerns over rising threats and violence against medical professionals. They emphasized the need for justice for their colleague and a safer working environment. Despite an invitation for talks, the doctors refused to attend without a live broadcast of the meeting. Chief Minister Banerjee, after waiting for over two hours, offered to resign, highlighting the challenging situation surrounding the ongoing protests.

In recent developments in West Bengal, junior doctors have reached out to the President and Prime Minister amid ongoing protests over violence and security concerns in the healthcare sector. This comes after their discussions with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee broke down for the third consecutive day, during which she even offered to resign to bring peace to the situation.

The protests were ignited by the tragic rape and murder of a trainee doctor at RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata on August 9. In their letter to President Droupadi Murmu, which was also sent to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other officials, the doctors expressed their fears and concerns regarding the increasing threats and violence faced by medical professionals.

They highlighted the urgent need for justice for their colleague, stating, “Your intervention during these difficult times will be a beacon of light, guiding us out of the darkness.” The doctors emphasized that the worrying trend of attacks on healthcare workers must be addressed for them to continue their vital work without fear.

Despite the state’s invitation for a meeting, the doctors did not attend due to their unmet demand for a live broadcast of the discussions. Chief Minister Banerjee criticized outside influences on the delegation, suggesting that some members were instructed not to negotiate.

As the situation continues to evolve, the hope remains that meaningful dialogue and solutions will emerge to ensure the safety of healthcare professionals in West Bengal.
