Ford Motor Company is in talks with the Tamil Nadu government to explore the possibility of producing vehicles for export, signaling its potential return to the Indian Market after a three-year absence. Chief Minister MK Stalin confirmed discussions aimed at renewing Ford’s long-standing partnership with the state, known for its automotive industry. The company is considering launching the new Ford Everest and developing an affordable EV platform in India. Ford previously ceased local production in 2021 and stopped exports in 2022 but is now reassessing opportunities, particularly regarding its Chennai plant. These discussions come as part of Tamil Nadu’s initiative to attract more investments in the automotive sector.

Ford Motor Company is eyeing a comeback to India after their exit three years ago. Recently, they had discussions with the Tamil Nadu government about resuming vehicle production, particularly for export. This was the second meeting between Ford officials and government representatives this year, indicating a renewed interest in investing in the region. Tamil Nadu, known for its automotive and auto component industry, is keen to attract more foreign investment.

Chief Minister MK Stalin expressed optimism about rekindling Ford’s 30-year partnership with the state. In a tweet following the meeting, he mentioned the promising talks they had on potentially restarting production in Tamil Nadu, aiming to produce vehicles for markets around the world.

There are strong indications that Ford is considering launching the Ford Everest in India as a completely built unit (CBU), along with developing an affordable electric vehicle (EV) platform tailored for the Indian Market.

In 2021, Ford ceased local manufacturing in India, struggling with sales and eventually halted exports in 2022. They sold one of their plants to Tata Motors last year and closed their other facility in Chennai, but they are still exploring options for the remaining plant.

As Ford looks to re-establish itself in India, the collaboration with Tamil Nadu could pave the way for new investments and job opportunities in the region.
