India plans to deploy 5,000 cyber commandos within five years, as announced by Union Home Minister Amit Shah. These specially trained officers will quickly respond to cyber threats and implement preventive measures to enhance national cybersecurity. Shah emphasized that safeguarding the digital landscape is crucial for the country’s growth. During the launch of the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), he introduced a ‘suspect registry’ to track criminals involved in cyber and online financial fraud, making information accessible to various agencies. A Cyber Fraud Mitigation Centre has also been established, collaborating with banks and law enforcement to combat cybercrime. With rising incidents of cyber fraud, this initiative aims to strengthen the nation’s defenses against digital threats.

India is set to strengthen its defenses against cyber threats as Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced on September 10th that the country will train and deploy 5,000 cyber commandos in the next five years. These special forces will consist of highly-skilled police officers who will be ready to respond promptly to cyber attacks and implement preventive measures. This announcement was made during the first foundation day of the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C).

Amit Shah emphasized the significance of cyber security as a vital aspect of national security, stating, “A country’s growth is not possible without ensuring cyber security.” To further bolster efforts in combating cyber crime, he inaugurated a new ‘suspect registry.’ This comprehensive database will compile information on individuals involved in cyber and online financial fraud, accessible to various states, union territories, and central agencies. The registry aims to enhance fraud risk management in the financial sector and addresses the need for a unified database in the fight against online criminal activities.

Additionally, a Cyber Fraud Mitigation Centre (CFMC) has been launched at the I4C, where representatives from major banks and law enforcement agencies will collaborate to tackle cyber crime effectively. The I4C, established in October 2018, serves as a national coordination hub addressing all cyber crime issues across India.

Cyber crime is on the rise in India, with staggering financial losses exceeding Rs 1,750 crore from January to April 2024, as reported through over 740,000 complaints. The number of daily cyber crime complaints surged significantly, reaching an average of 7,000 in May 2024, illustrating the increasing need for robust cyber security measures.

This initiative marks a significant step forward for India as it combats the growing menace of cyber crime, ensuring the safety and security of its citizens in the digital age.
