Israel’s Tower Semiconductor and India’s Adani Group are set to invest $10 billion (approximately 839.47 billion rupees) in a new semiconductor project in Maharashtra. This initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to establish India as a global chip-making hub, despite facing challenges including Foxconn’s withdrawal from a previous joint venture. The new plant aims to produce 40,000 wafers initially and could significantly enhance India’s semiconductor capacity. Alongside this project, additional investments worth 1.17 trillion rupees in various sectors, including electric vehicle manufacturing by companies like Skoda-Volkswagen and Toyota-Kirloskar, are expected to create around 29,000 jobs in the state, further strengthening the local economy.

In a significant move for India’s semiconductor sector, Tower Semiconductor from Israel and India’s Adani Group have announced a massive investment of 839.47 billion rupees, approximately $10 billion, for a new semiconductor project in Maharashtra. This was shared by Maharashtra’s Chief Minister Eknath Shinde on Thursday via a post on X.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been focused on transforming India into a major hub for semiconductor manufacturing despite facing some challenges. Notably, Foxconn had previously withdrawn from a $19.5 billion semiconductor project with Vedanta, and another venture, ISMC, which involves Tower Semiconductor, has faced delays in its $3 billion investment plans in India.

Still, optimism prevails as India projects its semiconductor Market will reach $63 billion by 2026. The planned semiconductor plant in Maharashtra will initially produce 40,000 wafers, as mentioned by the state’s Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

Additionally, other new projects have been approved in Maharashtra, which are set to create around 29,000 jobs. Among these, Skoda-Volkswagen and Toyota-Kirloskar are also planning to set up electric vehicle units, with significant investments aimed at enhancing the state’s automotive industry.

This strategic investment signals a new chapter for the Indian semiconductor landscape, promising substantial economic benefits and employment opportunities.
