Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal is seeking bail from the Supreme Court after being arrested by the CBI on June 26 related to an alleged excise policy scam. His lawyer argued that Kejriwal was not named in the CBI’s FIR and emphasized that he is not a flight risk, highlighting previous bail grants by the top court. The ongoing legal proceedings began in August 2023, leading to his arrest due to claims of witness tampering. The CBI and ED accuse Kejriwal of irregularities in the excise policy that favored license holders. The Supreme Court has allowed the CBI to respond to Kejriwal’s challenges against his arrest while he continues to seek legal recourse.

Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal faced legal challenges recently when he addressed the Supreme Court regarding his arrest linked to an alleged excise policy scam. During the hearing on September 5, 2024, Kejriwal’s attorney, Abhishek Singhvi, argued that the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) had not arrested him for nearly two years, labeling the arrest on June 26 as an “insurance arrest” after Kejriwal was granted bail in a separate money laundering case.

Singhvi emphasized that the CBI did not provide any notice before the arrest, and an ex-parte order from the trial court was issued without appropriate protocol. He sought bail for Kejriwal, asserting that the Chief Minister is not a flight risk, as he plays a crucial role in the government and poses no threat to society. Singhvi highlighted that Kejriwal was not named in the CBI’s FIR and has already been granted bail in prior cases by both the Supreme Court and a trial court.

The ongoing legal saga began in August 2023, with Kejriwal’s arrest on June 26 of this year. The Delhi High Court upheld the legality of this arrest, pointing out potential witness tampering as a concern. The excise policy under scrutiny was revoked in 2022 following allegations of irregularities and corruption.

As the situation develops, both the Supreme Court and the CBI continue to analyze Kejriwal’s petitions challenging the conditions of his arrest and bail denials.
