India’s ethanol blending initiative has significantly contributed to the economy, saving Rs 99,014 crore in foreign exchange since 2014, according to Union Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri. The government has achieved a 15 percent ethanol blending target and aims to reach 20 percent by 2025-26. This program has reduced crude imports by 173 lakh metric tonnes and lowered carbon emissions by 519 lakh metric tonnes over the past decade. The introduction of E20 and E100 fuels, with high-octane ratings, enhances engine efficiency. To boost production, the government has resumed rice supply to ethanol distilleries and plans to increase sugarcane juice availability next year.
India’s Ethanol Revolution: A Step Towards Sustainability
Union petroleum minister Hardeep Singh Puri announced recent advancements in India’s ethanol blending program during the International Conference on Bioenergy. Since its initiation in 2014, this initiative has saved the country an impressive Rs 99,014 crore in foreign exchange. The government has successfully achieved a 15 percent ethanol blending target, with plans to increase this to 20 percent by the Ethanol Supply Year (2025-26).
Puri highlighted the environmental benefits of the program, stating that the increased use of ethanol in automotive fuel has allowed India to substitute 173 lakh metric tonnes of crude oil imports, resulting in a reduction of 519 lakh metric tonnes in carbon emissions over the past decade.
Currently, E20 petrol, which contains 20 percent ethanol, is available at over 15,600 outlets across the country. Additionally, the recently launched E100 fuel, consisting of 93-93.5 percent ethanol, is designed for high-performance engines.
In a significant move to boost production, the government has resumed the supply of rice from the Food Corporation of India to ethanol distilleries, enabling them to source up to 23 lakh tonnes through e-auctions from August to October 2024. Furthermore, the government plans to supply sugarcane juice and syrup from November 2024 to enhance ethanol production even further.
Hardeep Singh Puri emphasized the importance of these initiatives for both economic and environmental sustainability, marking a pivotal moment in India’s bioenergy landscape. With continued support for ethanol production, the country is on its way to a greener and more self-sufficient future.

What is ethanol blending?
Ethanol blending is mixing ethanol, a type of alcohol, with gasoline to create a fuel that can be used in cars. This helps to reduce the use of foreign oil and can also lower emissions.
How has ethanol blending saved money?
Since 2014, using more ethanol in fuel has helped India save about Rs. 99,000 crore in foreign exchange. This is because the country spends less on importing oil.
What is foreign exchange (forex)?
Foreign exchange, or forex, is the money used to trade with other countries. When a country buys oil from abroad, it uses forex to pay for it.
Why is saving forex important for India?
Saving forex is important because it helps strengthen the country’s economy. When less money leaves the country for oil, it can be used for other things, such as improving infrastructure or education.
What are the benefits of using ethanol as fuel?
Using ethanol as fuel can reduce pollution, support local farmers, and make the country less reliant on oil imports. It can also create jobs in the renewable energy sector.
