Chief Justice of India (CJI) D Y Chandrachud has emphasized the importance of the district judiciary, calling it the “backbone of the judiciary” during the National Conference of the District Judiciary. He stated that labeling it as subordinate should be abandoned, highlighting that it plays a vital role in ensuring justice for citizens. The CJI pointed out the rising number of women joining the district judiciary, with significant representation showcased in various states such as Rajasthan and Delhi.

During the conference, which was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Justice Chandrachud addressed the challenges faced by judges, including the mental health impacts of dealing with difficult cases. He urged for a more open dialogue on judicial wellness, focusing on stress management and quality of life.

The CJI also spoke about the advancements in technology within the legal system, revealing that nearly 970 e-sewa kendras are now operational in district court complexes. These centers assist litigants and lawyers in navigating e-filing and case status inquiries, aiming to ensure that digital initiatives do not disadvantage ordinary citizens.

Justice Chandrachud’s address underlined the need for a shift away from outdated views of the judiciary, promoting a more inclusive and accessible legal system that reflects the diverse demographics of the nation.

This conference not only highlighted the progress of the judiciary but also set the stage for future reforms aimed at enhancing the delivery of justice across the country.
