Tejashwi Yadav, the leader of the Rashtriya Janata Dal and former deputy Chief Minister of Bihar, announced that his party will protest on September 1, demanding the inclusion of the 2023 caste survey findings in Schedule 9 of the Indian Constitution. He stated that the state government had previously provided a 65% reservation for OBC, SC, and ST communities, which has faced legal challenges. Yadav criticized the BJP for opposing these reservations and expressed confidence that the RJD would present its case effectively in court. The Bihar legislature had updated the reservation quotas based on the caste survey, increasing allocations for various communities. The protest aims to support the implementation of these caste survey findings.

Tejashwi Yadav, the Rashtriya Janata Dal leader and former Deputy Chief Minister of Bihar, announced that his party will hold a protest on September 1. The demonstration aims to push for the inclusion of the results from the 2023 caste survey into Schedule 9 of the Indian Constitution.

During a recent statement, Tejashwi emphasized the importance of this inclusion, claiming that the state’s previous government had set aside 65 percent of reservations for the Other Backward Classes (OBC), Scheduled Castes (SC), and Scheduled Tribes (ST). He criticized the current government, led by the BJP, for not advocating for these reservations and for trying to diminish their significance.

Tejashwi Yadav stated, “If the state government fails to effectively present the matter in court, we will take it to the Supreme Court.” He reaffirmed his commitment to being part of the planned protest in Bihar.

In June, the Patna High Court ruled against the Bihar Reservation Act, which had increased job and educational reservations from 50 percent to 65 percent. This decision declared the amendments unconstitutional, pointing out violations of equality under various articles.

Additionally, the caste survey findings led to an increase in reservations: SCs now receive 20 percent, Scheduled Tribes 2 percent, Extremely Backward Classes 25 percent, and Backward Classes 18 percent. Notably, Union Minister Chirag Paswan has shown support for a caste census, asserting its necessity for formulating government schemes.

This protest on September 1 highlights a significant moment in the ongoing discourse surrounding caste-based reservations in India, as political leaders continue to advocate for the rights of marginalized communities.
