Super Mario 64 players recently achieved the impossible by opening a door that was once thought to be unopenable, and they did it without cheating. Discussed by Pannenkoek2012 on YouTube, Discord user Alexpalix1 successfully accessed the cabin door at the base of Cool, Cool Mountain using a specific sequence of moves and an upset mother penguin (via Tom’s Hardware). This door, located next to the penguin nest, is a well-known spot where players have dropped a young penguin off the cliff in the classic Nintendo 64 game.

Typically, the door serves as an exit for Cool, Cool Mountain’s first stage, Slip Slidin’ Away, granting players a Star upon completion of the slide. However, Mario cannot walk back through from the outside, as one half of the door lacks a doorknob and is blocked by an invisible wall. Players have attempted to pass through the door over the game’s 28-year history, with no success until now.

Alexpalix1’s breakthrough method involves guiding the penguin towards the cabin, performing a backflip between the blue bird and the building, and altering Mario’s animation upon contact with the door’s hitbox. By manipulating Mario to turn before falling, he momentarily walks in midair, allowing him to use the door and enter the cabin.

While the mystery has finally been solved, there appears to be no practical advantage in replicating Alexpalix1’s strategy. The alternate entrance to the ice slide bottom does not offer significant benefits for players. Additionally, the method does not enhance speed-running strategies, as descending the slide from the top remains the quicker option.
