Two individuals were charged on Wednesday for operating a Manhattan cosmetics store that also served as a fencing operation, storing over $1 million in stolen goods, according to the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office.
The store, Rehana’s Cosmetics, located at 870 6th Avenue, was known for selling stolen items, attracting shoplifters looking to unload their loot, the DA’s office disclosed in a press release.
During a raid on the store and its two Broadway storage units in January, investigators discovered a vast array of stolen merchandise, including beauty supplies, medicines, clothing, kitchenware, and toys like Legos and coffee machines.
The stolen goods, which filled 450 boxes, were valued at over $1 million, with more than $200,000 coming from Macy’s alone. Other items were allegedly taken from stores like CVS, Rite Aid, and Victoria’s Secret.
Charged in the case are Bibi Rehana Khan, 54, from Mount Vernon, and Aaron Khan, 40, from the Bronx, along with the store itself. They face multiple counts of criminal possession of stolen property.
Manhattan DA Alvin Bragg emphasized the impact of retail theft on local businesses and the safety of employees and customers. He stressed the importance of proactive investigations into those profiting from such crimes, aiming to disrupt fencing networks and hold offenders accountable.
Retail theft has been a significant issue plaguing businesses, but with proactive measures and targeted investigations, authorities hope to stem the tide and ensure accountability for those engaging in such criminal activities.
